Inspired by Tradition
Tucked into a sun-warmed corner of old Athens, where bougainvillea spills from balconies and the echo of church bells lingers in the morning air, lies a quiet little shop with a soul of its own. For over forty years, AnastasiosIcons has stood as a gentle keeper of Greek Orthodox tradition — a place where time slows, incense drifts like memory, and every item on the shelf feels touched by devotion.
Anastasios himself was always there — seated on his worn wooden chair just outside the door, under the flicker of old lantern light, nodding warmly to passersby. His presence was part of the city’s rhythm. Inside the shop, shelves brimming with hand-painted icons, silver crosses, prayer ropes, and softly fragrant incense told stories as old as Byzantium. But it was Anastasios’s stories — shared freely with a smile — that stayed with you: tales from his pilgrimages to the Holy Land, moments with monks on Mount Athos, blessings received, and miracles whispered under olive trees.
As the seasons have turned and Anastasios nears his well-earned rest, he has entrusted the shop to Christos, a dear friend and fellow artisan of the neighborhood — someone who has long walked the same cobblestone streets and carries the same reverence in his hands. Christos now watches over the shop with quiet dedication, continuing a legacy not just of craftsmanship, but of soul.
At Anastasios Icons, each icon is still painted by hand on old, asymmetrical wood — no two pieces alike. The backs are fitted with leather latches, just as they have always been, a small gesture of authenticity and care. The most beloved subjects are all here — Christ Pantocrator, the Virgin Mary, St. George, St. Nicholas — but so too are the lesser-known saints whose lives were no less luminous. Each icon comes with a short account of the saint’s life and the day the Church honors their memory — a small window into heaven, framed in aged wood and centuries of faith.
We welcome you to explore this little world — a quiet homage to the beauty of belief, the richness of Orthodox tradition, and the fading charm of an Athens that still hums beneath the modern city. May your visit be not only a moment of shopping, but a step into something sacred.
