Saint George of Ioannina (Ο Άγιος Γεώργιος Ιωαννίνων).
This hand-painted icon depicts Saint George of Ioannina (Ο Άγιος Γεώργιος ο Νεομάρτυρας), a young Christian who gave his life for Christ in the city of Ioannina in 1838, during the Ottoman occupation. Painted in the traditional Byzantine style using egg tempera and embellished with genuine 22K gold leaf, the icon is mounted on uniquely hand-carved wood – a timeless tribute to courage and faith.
Born in Chios, Saint George was a humble tailor who lived and worked in Ioannina. He boldly refused to deny his Orthodox faith under pressure to convert to Islam and was martyred at the age of 30. His unwavering confession and martyrdom inspired generations of faithful Greek Orthodox Christians and made him the spiritual protector of the city of Ioannina.
His tomb and relics are venerated in the Church of Saint George in Ioannina, a site of pilgrimage and prayer for strength and perseverance.
