This graceful hand-painted icon honors Saint Philothei of Athens, a noblewoman turned monastic who shone as a beacon of compassion, courage, and Christian virtue during the Ottoman occupation of Greece. Painted in the revered Byzantine style with egg tempera and enhanced with authentic 22K gold leaf, the icon is mounted on asymmetrically hand-carved natural wood, capturing both her dignity and sanctity.

Born as Revoula Benizelou into one of Athens’ most prominent families, Saint Philothei dedicated her life and wealth to God by founding a women’s monastery and shelters for the poor and enslaved. She fearlessly defended Christian values and offered refuge to those suffering under oppression. Martyred for her acts of mercy, she remains a powerful intercessor for Greece and for all who strive to live lives of love and sacrifice.
